Catching up with updates from the summer. Let’s kick things off with more from the shoot with the delightful little Noah. He has big blue eyes and two very proud parents! Oh and his very own ark, just saying! In his cute little seaside theme nursery we took some precious portrait of Noah, Mummy and Daddy and he was the quietest little baby I have ever seen. What a gem!

If you’re expecting or you have a new addition to your family, get in touch, I’d love to hear from you.

The Portrait Diaries: Day 26

Sometime a photo takes you by surprise. This is one of those. We’d just changed set ups during a dance photoshoot so this was an inbetween shot while I tested the light and these ladies got themselves ready and into position. They were all very talented and inspirational dancers with incredible flexibility that I could only dream of!

Shortly after this, I got the shot we’d set out for, to capture them leaning back with their legs straight up in the air. I will share some more soon but for now just wanted to focus on the fact that though this isn’t the shot I was briefed to get, that’s the whole point. In the inbetween moments, magic happens and you can’t set a brief for that. That’s what I’m there to capture as a photographer. Not only those staged moments, but more importantly the magic inbetween.

I really love the expression on her face and the way the light is radiating around her. I also really like the contrast of the girl to the left looking down whilst the girl in the center is looking up. It’s as if they’re praying. Can a photo be spiritual? I think it can.

What do you think?

Keep Calm & Go Glamping: 18 photographers and 1 amazing weekend in Oxfordshire

Shooting Sisters, Glamping, Oxford glamping, photography holiday, Kent photographer, Herne Bay photographer

Two weekends ago saw me driving off on a mini adventure to the Oxfordshire countryside. Why you ask? Well, to join my Shooting Sisters for some glamping good times!! I’ve known these ladies for about ten months after we formed an online group of photographers from all over the UK. Formed by Jo of Summer Love Photography and Becky of Becky Male Photography who wanted to create an all female support network, nobody quite knew where it would lead but straight away knew it was something we wanted to be a part of.

We couldn’t all make this trip but 18 of us (eventually) made it together for a weekend to remember. Some of us got lost en route, some of us arrived in the pouring rain, some of us forgot our tooth brushes, and some of us slept in pyjamas, two pairs of socks, a jumper, dressing gown and under two duvets and STILL couldn’t get warm- but- I think I can safely say that regardless of the lack of sleep, or any other obstacle the weekend threw at us, we all took so much away from the weekend (and I’m not just talking about the leftover cider!)

Knowledge was shared, advice was given and friendships were built upon. We brought our online group to life and proved the value of our great support system many times over. Being in a job where we quite often sit alone infront of the computer it is so nice to have the opportunity to share experiences and hopes and dreams with people who are on the same page and understand the hard times from a first hand perspective. I genuinely think our support has contributed to one another’s success and given us the confidence to pursue our dreams. More importantly than succeeding, we have given each other the confidence to fail because now we know that even if something goes wrong, we will all be there to pick each other back up, dust each other down , learn from it and start over.

A quote I think sums up our group perfectly: “Learn from yesterday, live for today and hope for tomorrow”- Albert Einstein

What started as a support network of 26 photographers has transformed into something much, much more than I think any of us had even considered. I’m really excited to see the group continue to grow, not only as a group, but to be a part of everyone’s individual journey and see how we can all help each other to be the best we can be. I feel really honoured to be a part of something so positive and genuinely life-changing.

I have a massive place in my heart for everyone of these ladies and know that each and every one of them will continue to do great things.

Here’s a little slideshow of my photos from the weekend along with a group shot courtesy of Becky Male and our lightpainting collaboration courtesy of Anna Bowkis.

{At The Seaside…..} Margate: Part 1

With all this lovely weather this week it is the perfect time to explore the beautiful Kent coast.

Amongst some of our great seaside towns lay Margate, an artist’s haven undergoing huge regeneration. There are a growing number of must visit places such as Rough Trade, Scott’s furniture mart, Madam Popoffs and many more! Full of vintage clothes shops, second hand bargains, cute cafes, antique and giftware stores galore!

My good friend and fellow photographer Kim Conway has just launched her seaside portrait studio there! Pop along and visit her at 9A on the harbour arm and get your traditional seaside portrait souvenir for only £3.50! A bargain!

While you’re there pop in and check out “Horizon,” the fascinating audio visual exhibition by John Smith, and also Tracey Emin’s latest “She Lay Down Deep Beneath The Sea” at the Turner Contemporary. I am seriously in love with their gift shop, and it’s free entry! No excuses to miss it!

Here are some photos I took on the opening day of Kim’s studio. I was glad that I got to finally give Kim the perfect present that I’d found months ago and been meaning to give it to her for all that time. It actually couldn’t have been a better day to give to her so I’m glad I waited for this special day. Check it out in all it’s vintage beauty, fourth photo down!

Now I just hope the sun stays shining so we can all get out and explore! Where do you plan on visiting this summer? I’ve got more of this quirky town to share with you so come back for Margate part two soon! 😉

{The Portrait Diaries} Day 22: To fly, to fly

Day 22

I’m excited to be working with an amazing group of dancers at the weekend. I love watching/photographing people in their element so I can’t wait! I started thinking about the last time I shot dancers and it would’ve been about a year ago when I was working for Island Lake Camp.

The kids there are so super talented and as camp is happening right now not a day goes by that I don’t think about them all doing their thing. I took this shot whilst taking my photography class through the gymastics department on one of our walks around camp. This was one of my favourite places to photograph not only because they are all amazing gymnasts and dancers but because there’s no better shooting conditions than a roof with no walls!!

I’d love to be able to dance like this! Wouldn’t you?

{The Portrait Diaries} Day 21: Spot the difference?

Day 21

These photos of my lovely better half were taken for a black and white portrait challenge happening in a photography group I am part of.  I took a few and it was fairly easy to pick out these two as the best options to make black and white but I found it so hard to decide which picture I prefer. I’m getting much better at this but I get so emotionally attached to images of people I know that I find it harder to be subjective.

They are so similar and yet so different. I did manage to make a decision but I won’t tell you as I’m intrigued to know which you like best. While I work on my indecisiveness, let me know what you think?

laurenbythesea: the blog

Hi lovely people and welcome to the laurenbythesea blog which has been a long time coming! I’ve been meaning to do this for so long not only to record the journey that photography is taking me on but to share inspiration and beauty with those around me.  I would really like to build this blog into something wonderful, inspiring and insightful so I hope you’ll stick around a while or come back soon if you have to dash off.

While the website is still in progess (i’m a perfectionist) you can go to my facebook page if you’d like to see my most recent work. I try to post a photo a day there just to show what I’ve been up to.

I’m keen to get blogging though and I couldn’t wait any longer as I want to keep you up to date with my adventures and that includes the gradual improvement of this website. This blog will mainly feature photography related posts. I’ll be doing some how-to features , before and afters to show what happens in the editing stages, and some inspirational posts too so i can share what and who inspires me. If there’s anything you’d like to see a post on make sure to get in touch as I’d love for this blog to be as interactive as possible, so get involved. You can email me at lauren@laurenbythesea.com

I recently made the landing page below to greet new visitors on facebook, show them what I’m about and hopefully encourage them to ‘like’ my page and stay in touch. So if you know anyone you think would like my work, point them in this direction.

Thanks and until next time,
