Catching up with updates from the summer. Let’s kick things off with more from the shoot with the delightful little Noah. He has big blue eyes and two very proud parents! Oh and his very own ark, just saying! In his cute little seaside theme nursery we took some precious portrait of Noah, Mummy and Daddy and he was the quietest little baby I have ever seen. What a gem!

If you’re expecting or you have a new addition to your family, get in touch, I’d love to hear from you.

Well James and Ella arrived happy and healthy and have been keeping Mummy and Daddy very busy. We had a wonderful day capturing some memories to treasure. I have so many really adorable photographs of little James & Ella, they were such little characters, but I couldn’t wait to share a little sneak peak. I hope you like them. Aren’t they cute?

I’m here doing a little happy dance so I thought I would share my joy. Really delighted to to say that I won a Bronze Bar in The Guild of Photographer’s monthly competition with this shot below. I was also commended for the two shots below it.

It means a lot to me to be recognised for hard work and I’m always trying to improve so hopefully may have a silver bar award to share with you in the future. Fingers crossed.

{The Portrait Diaries} Day 18: Changes

Lately I’ve been thinking about how quickly life seems to pass us by. Sometimes, don’t you just want to grab it with both hands and say ‘SLOW DOWN!’ so you can take more of it in?

I think one of the reasons I’m more aware of it this year than any other year is that my nephew was born at the end of 2011 and so my concept of time has become associated with how much he grows and changes. I feel strangely more conscious of time passing, seasons changing, and even the flowers growing.

I am also more thankful than ever for my love of photography. It allows us to be aware of our own growth and change as well as those around us. We can record a moment in time, make memories and create stories of the past that our minds alone can’t contain. Where would we be without photos? They’re like little fragments of our past that we hold onto and that help us make sense of who we are.

It’s strange to think that the world never stops turning. When we stop and sleep at night, le is racing on. Though I’m not much of a numbers geek, I’m a sucker for a good musical and in one of my favourites, Rent, they sing about how to measure the 525’600 minutes in a year. I still struggle to get my head around it… we tend to think of a year as a long time, but in reality when put into small fractions of time, it’s nothing!

We sleep on average for seven hours a day,  so we are only actually awake for 6,205 minutes a year! Shocking isn’t it? It makes me want to get out and make the most of every minute. What does it make you want to do?

I’ve always wished there were more hours in the day and that we didn’t need to sleep. When I was little I remember whenever I didn’t want to go to sleep, my parents used to tell me how important sleep was because it’s what makes you grow. Though I think I don’t think I’m going to get any taller I sometimes remind myself of that even now when I don’t want to sleep because we’re still growing after all, just in a different way.

It is remembering how fleeting time is that makes me want to keep taking photos, to cherish every moment. So I am sharing this photo (not just to make you broody haha) but because when I look at babies I can’t help thinking about how fast they grow up. Today I just want to remember what he is like right now.

Today you are 1440 minutes older than yesterday. Make every minute count.

Newborn photography- 8 day old Daisy

Recently I had the pleasure of photographing little baby Daisy. At only 8 days old she was an absolutely adorable little bundle of love.

Older sister Lily was also a star and I couldn’t resist getting some shots of the priceless expressions that lit up her face. She loved giving Daisy kisses and cuddles which made for some lovely photographs.

One great idea for using your newborn photos is to use them for your new baby announcement cards. I designing and offer these as an addition to my newborn shoots so I will be showing some examples of that on the blog soon, but for now here’s the highlights from Daisy’s newborn shoot, with some appearances from Lily too.

If you’re interested in getting newborn photos please give me a call on 07817084123. It’s always best to get them in those first 2 weeks when they love to just sleep.

Have a great bank holiday everyone!

Capturing life- Why newborn photography?

In my last post I mentioned that I’ve been a few newborn shoots as I’ve been starting to focus photographically on areas I enjoy the most. I wanted to do a personal post to share why I feel drawn to the genre of newborn photography, to give you an insight into why I do what I do & maybe to give myself an insight into where my photography journey might be headed.

Thinking about it I realised I never really had much exposure to babies growing up. I held my cousins once or twice as a teenager, but swiftly handed them back when they started to cry or when I wondered “what is that smell?” It wasn’t until my nephew was born 4 ½ years ago that I got to really witness that precious time when a new life comes into the world & everyone is in awe at the wonder that is a newborn baby.

It wasn’t all excitement & happiness however as my nephew Jack was born 10 weeks premature, weighing only 3 lbs 2oz when he was born. Nobody got to hold him straight away as he had to stay in an incubator. Even when we could hold him he had to spend seven weeks in St Thomas’ special care baby unit. He was so, so tiny. All we could do was sit helplessly, glad he was here & willing him on in his fight for life.

Of course it is impossible not to fall into a daze looking at the little fingers & toes of newborn babies, but watching Jack in his first month of life I was completely overwhelmed & fascinated. I didn’t want to blink. I’d often forget to breathe whilst holding him. It really was a huge reminder to me of how sacred life is & I wanted to always remember that.

Though I wanted to photograph his every move, I was soon to embark on a study year abroad so I sadly had to live vicariously through relatives as my first year of being an Auntie- cooing over him through Skype instead of in person. (Thank God for Skype!) I’ve since made up for missing out & I photograph him A LOT though he much prefers to be my assistant & insists on carrying all my equipment …

It truly has been such an adventure watching him grow up. Though he has asthma as a result of being born with underdeveloped lungs, you’d otherwise never know of the problems he had at birth. Such a little brainbox with, in his own words, a “massive imagination,” he really is full of life & energy. Absolutely one of my favourite people of all time.

I was already passionate about photography, taking my camera everywhere even before Jack was born, but watching him grow up has been a big inspiration. It has taken my photography to a different place & is one of the reasons I adore working with children, capturing their little quirks & personality traits as they become little people & mini adults. Jack reminds me what it is like to be a child- when you see the world through eyes of hope & wonder- it makes me strive to always see the world like that- with an open heart & mind. For that I will always be thankful.

Well now I am energized & ready for action as my second nephew is due, on Christmas Eve would you believe! I cannot put into words exactly how excited I am to begin that journey all over again, capturing those little fingers & toes, laughs & smiles & special moments as he grows up. I find myself wondering what kind of person he’ll become and what a great brother Jack will be. As we sit & await his arrival all I know is that this time around I will be here for the first year & plan to make the most of that, with Jack as my assistant I imagine.

Thanks for reading,
Lauren xxx

Newborn sneakpeek

In the last few weeks I’ve been working on building up my portfolio of newborn photography. I’ve started to specialise in children’s and couple’s photography so newborn photography is definitely an area I want to focus on.  I have loads of ideas to try out and I just wanted to show you a few sneakpeeks of a recent newborn shoot.

This little fella did not stay sleepy for long and didn’t like being on his belly at all so I didn’t go for the image I had in mind but that’s  part of working with babies- you can plan and plan but when it comes down to it you have to adapt and go with what works on the day. He was so lovely I didn’t mind one bit. For the purposes of privacy I’m not publishing this little fella’s name so let’s just say I was more than happy to sit and watch him as he was absoultely adorable. It was getting dark fast though so I decided to capture him where he was most comfortable while I still had some light.

If you are expecting then please get in touch as I’m offering really good value packages on newborn photography. I’d love to hear your feedback or comments are most welcome below! I think he sure deserves some oohs and ahhhs! Here are some of my favourites….

Until next time,
